The plastic pipe and fittings industry continues to lead the way towards sustainability. The industry’s product standards, third party certifications, public peer-reviewed Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) and participation in the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Building for Environmental and Economic Sustainability (BEES) Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) database are complimented by the Plastic Pipe and Fittings Association (PPFA) “Sustainable Manufacturing Standard (SMS-01-2012) and “Sustainable Manufacturing Conformity Assessment Program for Plastic Piping Components” (SMCAP).
The SMCAP determines a facility’s compliance to the SMS 01-2012 standard. The purposes of the SMS 01-2012 are to establish requirements for measuring both the existing environmental performance and to drive the continuous improvement thereof by manufacturers of plastic piping system components. SMS 01-2012 applies to those who manufacture plastic piping system components and to the resources used in their manufacture.
SMCAP promotes: Water Conservation; Lowering Packaging Materials Waste; Improving Material Conversion Efficiency; Reducing Product Material Waste; Increasing Energy Efficiency; Increasing Plant Safety; Safe Product Use; Continued Participation in Life Cycle Analysis; Maintaining NSF/ANSI 61 certification; and Increasing Sustainability of these Operations.
The program certifies reductions in a manufacturer's year over year operational footprint by implementing manufacturing procedures and practices for the production of plastic pipe and fittings.
Over the next 6 - 24 months forward-looking companies will establish their commitment to sustainable manufacturing practices by beginning the certification process. Promotional materials, packaging, and/or products will be marked with the PPFA leaf logo to signify the products come from a facility that is compliant with SMS-01 and the SMCAP. By asking for, and selecting these products you will be supporting companies working towards sustainability. If you do not directly select products, tell someone who does about the program.
