Plastic Pipe Fittings are made from a variety of thermoplastic resins including:  

  • ABS - Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene
  • CPVC - Chorinated Poly (Vinyl Chloride)
  • PE - Polyethylene
  • PS - Polystyrene
  • PVC - Polyvinyl Chloride
Plastic pipe and fittings systems:
  • Are easier and less expensive to install than metal systems. Feature superior flow due to smooth interior finish. Do not rot, rust, corrode or collect waste. Resist mechanical damage. Are easy to handle (one person can load and unload). Take less time to rough in than metal materials.
  • Withstand earth loads and shipping (with proper handling).
Plastic fittings are used for:
  • DWV - Drain Waste & Vent (ABS & PVC). Sewer & Drain - (PVC & PS). Water mains - (PVC). Water service Lines - (CPVC, PVC & PE). Irrigation - (PVC & PE). Conduit - (PVC & PE). Fire sprinkler- (CPVC).
  • Various industrial applications (All).

Most plastic fittings may be used in applications both in the ground or above ground. They may also be used outdoors if the material contains stabilizers and UV inhibitors to shield against ultraviolet radiation, or jurisdictions may require the system to be painted with a water-based latex paint. Check with the fittings supplier for details about local regulations for each material.

Plastic fittings are available in various sizing schemes consistent with all of the following:

  • Copper tube sizes ¼"-2" (CTS). Schedule 40 pipe Up To 12" (Sch40/IPS/DWV). Schedule 80 pipe Up To 12" (Sch 80). Sewer & Drain sizing 3"-12"+. Gasketed Sewer & Drain sizing 6"-12"+. PE piping systems ¼"-2" (SDR, Sch 40, CTS).
  • Mechanical for all systems.

Plastic fittings are recognized as acceptable for use in all major model plumbing codes. For material specific applications refer to the respective material site or refer to Construction Codes section. Always confirm local plumbing codes before installation.

Most plastic fittings materials are unaffected by commonly used household chemicals and cleaners. Refer to the respective sites for material specific applications.

The standards for plastic fittings generally require that the product can be readily identified with markings which may include the following:

  1. The manufacturer's name or trademark. The standard to which it conforms. Fitting size. Resin type. Item specific identifier. Mold cavity specific identifier. DWV if for drainage. SDR number or Schedule number.
  2. If the fitting is for potable water, a laboratory seal or mark attesting to suitability for potable water.

Plastic fittings are relatively simple to install. Three common methods of joining fittings and pipe include the following:

  1. Solvent Cements & Primers
  2. Mechanical threads.
  3. Barbed inserts with clamping rings.

Always follow local code requirements and recommended safe work practices. Plastic plumbing systems should not be tested with compressed air or other gasses. Refer to the respective sites for material specific applications.
